Boiler Losing Pressure? Here Are Some Common Reasons Why

If you keep having to top up the pressure on your boiler, it could be a sign that something within your heating system needs attention.

Most sealed central heating systems need to maintain a certain level of pressure to operate correctly. While an occasional adjustment may be needed, regularly losing pressure isn’t something that should be ignored.

Here are some of the most common causes.

1. A Leak Somewhere in the Heating System

Even a very small leak can cause boiler pressure to gradually drop.

Check around radiators, valves and any visible pipework for signs of water or dampness. Some leaks can be extremely small and difficult to spot, particularly if pipework is hidden beneath floors or behind walls.

2. Problems Around Your Radiators

Radiator valves and connections can sometimes develop small leaks. You may notice moisture around the valve or staining beneath the radiator.

Pressure can also temporarily fall after bleeding radiators, as releasing trapped air reduces the pressure within the system.

3. Pressure Relief Valve Problems

Your boiler has a pressure relief valve designed to protect the heating system if the pressure becomes too high.

If this valve develops a fault or doesn’t reseal correctly, water may escape through the discharge pipe outside your property, causing the boiler pressure to gradually fall.

4. An Issue Inside the Boiler

If there are no obvious signs of a leak elsewhere, the problem could be within the boiler itself.

Components such as the expansion vessel or internal seals can develop faults that affect system pressure. These are not components homeowners should attempt to repair themselves.

When Should You Call a Heating Engineer?

If you’ve topped up your boiler and the pressure continues to fall, it’s worth having the system professionally checked.

Repeatedly repressurising the boiler may temporarily get your heating working again, but it doesn’t address the underlying cause.

A qualified heating engineer can investigate the boiler and heating system, identify where pressure is being lost and recommend the appropriate repair.
