Is Your Log Burner Winter Ready? What to Check Before Lighting It This Autumn

There’s something particularly welcoming about lighting a log burner on a cold autumn evening. After sitting unused for much of the summer, however, it’s worth giving your stove and associated components some attention before settling down in front of the first fire of the season.

A few simple checks now can help make sure you’re ready for the colder months ahead.

Start with a visual inspection of the stove itself. Look at the door, glass, seals and internal components for any obvious signs of damage or deterioration. Door seals are particularly important because they help the stove operate as intended.

You should also consider the condition of the chimney or flue. Keeping the flue system appropriately maintained and arranging sweeping at suitable intervals is an important part of responsible stove ownership. If you’re unsure when yours was last checked or swept, autumn is a sensible time to deal with it.

Your choice of fuel matters too. If you’re burning wood, it should be suitably dry and ready for use. Wet or inappropriate fuel can result in poor performance, increased smoke and additional deposits within the chimney.

Another important check is your carbon monoxide alarm. Homes using solid-fuel appliances should have an appropriate alarm installed in the required location. Test yours and make sure it hasn’t reached the end of its recommended working life.

When you first use your log burner again, pay attention to how it behaves. Difficulty lighting, excessive smoke, unusual smells or noticeable changes in performance shouldn’t simply be ignored.

Getting everything checked before winter also means you have time to arrange any necessary maintenance rather than discovering a problem on the evening you really want to use the fire.
