The Big Heating Switch-On: Is Your Central Heating Ready for Autumn?
The mornings are getting cooler, the evenings are drawing in and, across Lincolnshire, thermostats that have barely been touched all summer are starting to get some attention again.

Before you wait for the first really cold evening, it’s worth switching your central heating on now and checking that everything is working as it should.
Start by turning your heating on and allowing the system to run for a while. Check each radiator to make sure it’s warming up properly. If a radiator remains cold at the top, trapped air could be the problem and it may need bleeding. Cold areas elsewhere on a radiator can sometimes indicate other issues within the heating system.
It’s also worth taking a quick look at your boiler. Is the pressure where it should be? Are there any warning lights or error codes? Is the boiler making noises you don’t remember hearing last winter?
Your thermostat and heating controls deserve some attention too. Check that timers are correctly set and that the heating responds when you adjust the thermostat. It’s much better to discover a problem on a mild September day than on the first freezing night of winter!
Autumn is also an ideal time to think about your annual boiler service. Regular servicing can help identify potential problems, ensure your boiler is operating correctly and reduce the likelihood of an unwelcome breakdown when your heating is working its hardest.
If your boiler struggled last winter or is becoming increasingly unreliable, it may also be worth discussing whether replacement would be more economical than continuing with repairs.
